Advanced Problems in Core Mathematics

This booklet is intended to help you to prepare for STEP examinations. It should also be useful as preparation for any undergraduate mathematics course, even if you do not plan to take STEP. The questions are all based on recent STEP questions. I chose the questions either because they are ‘nice’ – in the sense that you should get a lot of pleasure from tackling them – or because I felt I had something interesting to say about them. In this booklet, I have restricted myself (reluctantly) to the syllabus for Papers I and II, which is the A-level core (i.e. C1 to C4) with a few additions. This material should be familiar to you if you are taking the International Baccalaureate, Scottish Advanced Highers or other similar courses.

Direction fields are now discussed much earlier, in Sec. 1.2. This "geometrical" and "qualitative" approach to differential equations may provide a better conceptual understanding of equations and solutions. The graphical power of a CAS will be helpful in this context. The second major change concerns the combination of related solution methods. Solution by separation and solution by reduction to separable form now appear in a single section (Sec. 1.3). Similarly, exact equations and integrating factors are both discussed in the same section (Sec. 1,5). Team Projects and CAS Projects are included in most problem sets

ABSTRACT ALGEBRA: A STUDY GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

I first taught an abstract algebra course in 1968, using Herstein’s Topics in Algebra. It’s hard to improve on his book; the subject may have become broader, with applications to computing and other areas, but Topics contains the core of any course. Unfortunately, the subject hasn’t become any easier, so students meeting abstract algebra still struggle to learn the new concepts, especially since they are probably still learning how to write their own proofs. This “study guide” is intended to help students who are beginning to learn about abstract algebra. Instead of just expanding the material that is already written down in our textbook, I decided to try to teach by example, by writing out solutions to problems. I’ve tried to choose problems that would be instructive, and in quite a few cases I’ve included comments to help the reader see what is really going on. Of course, this study guide isn’t a substitute for a good teacher, or for the chance to work together with other students on some hard problems.

A Handbook of Statistics

The first section consists of one chapter that covers the motivation for studying statistics and some basic definitions used throughout the course. Sections two through four are further divided into chapters covering a specific concept or technique in support of the main section. For instance, the descriptive statistics section is broken down into two sections, one focusing on graphical techniques used to summarize data and the other focusing on numerical summaries of data sets. The techniques introduced in these sections will be illustrated using real world examples. Readers can practice the techniques demonstrated in the chapters with practice problems that are included within the chapters. The primary software package used to carry out the techniques introduced in this book is Microsoft Excel.
