THE NEW MATHLETE PROBLEM BOOK

The Nassau County Interscholastic Mathematics League (NCIML) began to function during the 1955-56 school year with 18 members. Currently the League has 54 participating schools and approximately 600 student Mathletes who take part in six contests during each school year. The NCIML came into existence primarily due to the efforts of Dr. George Lenchner, who modeled the League after a sister organization in New York City. Today the Nassau League is probably one of the most successful and active groups of its kind in the country. As a result of an article which appeared in the Mathematics Teacher describing the operation of the NCIML (Lenchner, February 1959) similar groups were organized throughout the nation. In 1969, John P. Titterton, Executive Secretary of the NCIML listed some of the League's contest problems and sample solutions in a book entitled, Ten Years of Problems from the NCIML 1960- 1969. Although the distribution of this book was limited, its value was immediately apparent to students and coaches alike. At the September 1973 Coaches meeting of the NCIML, the Book Committee was formed to produce The New Mathlete Problem Book containing the League's problems and sample solutions for the school years 1961-62 to 1973-74. The Committee gratefully acknowledges the assistance it received from Gene Devereaux, Tony DiLuna, and Alan Stone as reviewers of some of the sample solutions. We also wish to thank Leonard Lufrano and Bernard Goudreau for their diagrams and illustrations.

Problem Primer for the Olympiad

The best way to use this book is, of course, to look up the problems and solve them! If you cannot get started then look up the section 'Tool Kit' which is a collection of theorems and results which are generally not available in school textbooks but which are extremely useful in solving problems. As in any other trade, you will have to familiarize yourself with the tools and understand them to be able to use them effectively. We strongly recommend that that you try to devise your own proofs for these results or look these up in books. (A list of reference books is given at the end.) You should look up the solution only after you have tried the problem on your own for some time. And the story does not end with the complete solution of a problem you look for other solutions, generalisations, interconnections between various problems,... One of our experiences is a perfect case in point. The problems 51 and 65 in this book appeared in the INMO 92. Our first solutions to both these problems used simple, straight-forward trigonometry. Later, it turned out that there were elegant 'pure geometry' solutions to both, and in fact the two problems were related! We leave it as a challenge to you to use Problem 51 to get another 'pure geometry' solution to problem 65. With this challenge we leave you to start on your voyage of discovery! May you come up with many gems and when you do, be sure to let us know.

Еще до революции в первые годы советской власти в трудах историков-востоковедов, особенно корифея русского востоковедений академика В. В. Бартольда, были собраны и проанализированы многочисленные данные древних и средневековых авторов (греческих, латинских, китайских, арабских, таджикско-персидских и т. д.), касающиеся территории Таджикистана, истории таджиков и их предков. Письменные источники ясно и недвусмысленно свидетельствовали, что древние предки таджиков и сами таджики создали своеобразную и очень высокую культуру. Однако самое детальное изучение письменных источпиков не позволяло воссоздать сполько-нибудь полную картину истории и истории культуры таджикского народа по той причине, что для древнего периода, письменные источники посят отдывочный в случайный характер. Что же введется эпоха средневековья, то для зной моли письменные источники являются несравненно более обиирными, но и от освещают деталью граным образом политические события.

Еще при жизни академика Владимира Афанасьевича Обручева возникла мысль об издании трехтомника его избранных трудов по геологии Азии, и составленная тогда программа была им одобрена. Б настоящее время она принята за основу при разработке плана шеститомного издания трудов Б. А. Обручева.
