Eine sorgfältige Betrachtung des Kontexts zeichnet Sauerbruch Huttons vielfach preisgekrönte internationale Projekte aus. Das städtische Umfeld ist für die Architekten ebenso maßgeblich wie die ökologische Performance, die in ihren Bauten mit einem Selbstverständnis umgesetzt wird, das höchste Sorgfalt bei technischen Aspekten miteinschließt und darüber hinausgeht. Gebäude wie das Umweltbundesamt in Dessau, die Polizei- und Feuerwache in Berlin oder das Museum Sammlung Brandhorst in München sind beispielhaft für den überzeugenden Umgang mit Materialität und Farbigkeit. Heute arbeitet das 1989 von Matthias Sauerbruch und Louisa Hutton gegründete Architekturbüro mit Sitz in Berlin an verschiedensten Projekten weltweit – von Wohnbau bis Museum, von Bildungseinrichtung bis Bürohochhaus – und legt dabei Wert auf die präzise Detaillierung seiner zugleich ökologisch bewussten und stadträumlich sensiblen Planungen.

The Technology of Bamboo Building

The word “bamboo” was introduced by Carl von Linné in 1753. Bamboo is a grass plant like rice, corn and sugar cane. Different to these, the lignin of its tissues becomes af ter some years a structure as hard as wood, but more flexible and light. Bamboos, in their wild form, grow on all of the continents ex cept Europe, from 51° north to 47° south. There are tropical and subtropical bamboos that thrive in different ecological niches, from cloud forests with humidity levels above 90% like the Guadua angustifolia in the Chocó De partment of Colombia, to semi-arid zones of India (Dendrocalamus strictus). The majori ty of species are found in warm zones with humidity levels of over 80%, in tropical cloud forests, and in clayey and humid soils; for this reason they are often found near water.
