PROFESSOR HIGGINS’S PROBLEM COLLECTION

Mathematics is a wonderful subject because its content is so rich, diverse, and deep but what is more, everything in it is true. That is why students enjoy applying what they have learnt to a wide variety of questions. The fifty problems here are presented under five broad headings: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Chance and combinations, and Movement. These wide fields cover most of the mathematics met at secondary school level. Although the emphasis is on the mathematics itself, solving the problems allows us to comprehend many interesting facets of the world from encryption, to the motion of the planets, to understanding why recessive gene traits never die out. Many of the processes we see going on around us have underlying mathematical structures and so cannot be fully understood other than through mathematical analysis. The problems are generally not standard exercises but have some degree of novelty or special interest that goes with them. The primary purpose is to allow you to do something with your mathematics rather than merely practise it. Within each part, there is some gradation in difficulty of the problems. I would hope that any reader could look at some of the problems and think to themselves that they could figure them out somehow.

Compiled and Solved Problems in Geometry and Trigonometry

This book is a translation from Romanian of "Probleme Compilate şi Rezolvate de Geometrie şi Trigonometrie" (University of Kishinev Press, Kishinev, 169 p., 1998), and includes problems of 2D and 3D Euclidean geometry plus trigonometry, compiled and solved from the Romanian Textbooks for 9th and 10th grade students, in the period 1981-1988, when I was a professor of mathematics at the "Petrache Poenaru" National College in Balcesti, Valcea (Romania), Lycée Sidi El Hassan Lyoussi in Sefrou (Morocco), then at the "Nicolae Balcescu" National College in Craiova and Dragotesti General School (Romania), but also I did intensive private tutoring for students preparing their university entrance examination. After that, I have escaped in Turkey in September 1988 and lived in a political refugee camp in Istanbul and Ankara, and in March 1990 I immigrated to United States. The degree of difficulties of the problems is from easy and medium to hard. The solutions of the problems are at the end of each chapter. One can navigate back and forth from the text of the problem to its solution using bookmarks. The book is especially a didactical material for the mathematical students and instructors.

PROBLEMS IN PLANE AND SOLID GEOMETRY

This book has no equal. The priceless treasures of elementary geometry are nowhere else exposed in so complete and at the same time transparent form. The short solutions take barely 1.5 − 2 times more space than the formulations, while still remaining complete, with no gaps whatsoever, although many of the problems are quite difficult. Only this enabled the author to squeeze about 2000 problems on plane geometry in the book of volume of ca 600 pages thus embracing practically all the known problems and theorems of elementary geometry. The book contains non-standard geometric problems of a level higher than that of the problems usually offered at high school. The collection consists of two parts. It is based on three Russian editions of Prasolov’s books on plane geometry. The text is considerably modified for the English edition. Many new problems are added and detailed structuring in accordance with the methods of solution is adopted.
