Intellectual Property Law in Africa.

Examining the harmonisation of intellectual property (IP) policy, law and administration in Africa, this book evaluates the effectiveness of efforts to establish continental IP institutions and frameworks. It also considers sub-regional initiatives led by the regional economic communities and the regional IP organisations, focusing on relevant protocols and agreements that address IP as well as the implementing institutions. The book assesses the progress of such initiatives with particular reference to the current socio-economic status of African states. It argues that that harmonisation initiatives need to be crafted in a way that is supportive of the developmental goals of African states and advocates for due consideration of individual states’ unique conditions and aspirations. This book will be of great relevance to scholars and policy makers with an interest in IP law and its harmonisation in Africa.

Cicero’s Law Rethinking Roman Law of the Late Republic.

In his 1995 book, The Spirit of Roman Law (Athens, GA 1995), Alan Watson included a chapter provocatively titled ‘Cicero the outsider’. By locating this chapter towards the end of the book, Watson hinted that any discus- sion of Cicero in the context of the spirit of Roman law (a difficult concept in itself) could only really form part of an appendix (in this case Appendix A) to a book of this kind. The gist of this chapter, following the then dominant Romanist view, is that ‘Cicero’s outlook [was] remarkably dif- ferent from that of the Roman jurists’ (at 200).1 As this statement implies, for Watson, Cicero stood outside the traditional narrative of the Roman jurists.

Law, Migration, and Human Mobility.

Magdalena Kmak is a Professor of Public International Law, with a specialization in Migration and Minority Research at Åbo Akademi University (Finland). She has received her PhD from the Institute of Law Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, and the title of Docent in law and globalization from the University of Helsinki (Finland). She is a PI and Consortium Director in the project Diversity, Trust, and Two-Way Integration (Mobile Futures) funded by the Strategic Research Council established within the Academy of Finland (2021–2027) and an affiliated researcher at the Centre of Excellence in Law, Identity and the European Narratives at the University of Helsinki. Magdalena’s research inter- ests encompass law and mobility, new minorities, exile studies and history of migration, public international law, human rights and International and European refugee and migration law. Magdalena is also co-founder of the Nordic Network on Climate Related Displacement and Mobility.
