Bézier and splines in image processing and machine vision

The rapid development of spline theory in the last few decades — and its wide range of applications in many diverse areas — has made the subject an exciting option for engineers and computer scientists. However, most books on spline theory are general texts on approximation theory, leaving the implementation of spline functions to the reader. In this book, we focus on Bézier and spline techniques in image processing and machine vision, describing their properties with the aid of many examples, both academic and practical: from industrial machine vision to human face detection and facial expression analysis. We introduce Bézier curves and their mathematical properties, Bézier surfaces and their applications to shape modeling in computer graphics, NURBS curves for more complex shapes, and discuss several aspects of spline approximation and interpolation.
