На территории Белоруссии нет другого региона, где бы в раннем средневековье так тесно перепле- лись исторические судьбы различных этнических элементов, как это имело место в Верхнем Поне- манье. Здесь восточнославянские племена дрегови- чей, кривичей, волынян соседствовали с восточ- нобалтскими (литовскими), западнобалтскими (ятвяжскими) и западнославянскими (мазовецки- ми) племенами. В конце I - начале II тысячелетия н. э. на этой территории возникли города Гродно, Новогрудок, Волковыск, Слоним, Турейск и др.

В разнообразном и разностороннем научном творчестве акад. В. М. Алексеева история востоковедения занимает место не малое, хотя труды по этой теме и не были обобщены им в книгу. Однако в списке работ, намеченных в январе 1941 г. В. М. Алексеевым к первоочередному осуществлению, значатся «Этюды из истории русской и советской китаистики». Замысел не был осуществлен, но, несо- мненно, он опирался на многое из того, что стало содержанием настоящего сбор- ника. Расположенные нами тематически работы и документы разных лет составили четыре раздела, каждый из которых при полном исчерпании всех имеющихся в архиве ученого материалов дал бы отдельную книгу. Большая часть вошедших в сборник работ никогда не публиковалась (ру- кописи подготовлены к печати М. В. Баньковской при консультациях В. В. Петрова и Л. Н. Меньшикова).
