Trillings Buch könnte heute in Deutschland als ein Beitrag zum Verständnis dessen gelesen werden, was es mit dem Gerede von der »Neuen Subjektivität« auf sich haben mag. Die Frage, was die Literatur mit »Aufrichtigkeit« zu tun hat, wird von ihm an Rousseau, Jane Austen und Joseph Conrads »Herz der Finsternis« (der literarischen Vorlage für Coppolas Vietnamfilm »Apocalypse Now«) erörtert, und er zeigt, daß die alte Aufrichtigkeit heute nicht nur in der Literatur, sondern in den neuen Modepsychologien, die die Psychoanalyse abgelöst hab
