The success of antibiotics and immunization over the past 50 years in reducing mortality from infectious disease has thrown into prominence a new set of lethal diseases, the chronic illnesses of middle and late life-heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. The medical profession has attacked those diseases with ingenious high tech- nological responses: heart medications, coronary thrombolysis, cor- onary angioplasty, coronary bypass surgery, and so on for heart attacks; anticoagulants and endarterectomies for carotid artery dis- ease; and radiation and a panoply of toxic chemotherapeutic agents for cancer in addition to surgical excisions. But, these approaches are palliative, rather than curative. They do little or nothing to halt the progression of the underlying pathological processes. These ap- proaches to established disease have also proven to be increasingly expensive.

INTRODUCTION TO RANDOM PROCESSES IN ENGINEERING

This book is intended for a senior-undergraduate or first-year-graduate level course in Random Processes in Communication/Control Engineering. It de- velops the theoretical framework fundamental to the processing of random signals and data, centered on the concepts of Stationarity, Correlation, and Spectrum, including the Ergodic Principle and the Sampling Principle, and principles of digital computer Simulation of Random Processes. A course in probability, standard in most engineering schools, is a primary prerequisite. Additionally, a course in Systems and Signals (which includes some Fourier analysis, Series, and Transforms) and some elementary Linear Algebra, in lieu of a formal course, would be helpful. Proficiency in background areas such as Integral Calculus and Complex Variables is desirable.

The changes and new material in this ninth edition of Physical Education for Elementary School Children reflect our continuing emphasis on a developmentally based cur- riculum. Each chapter continues to accommodate the three developmental levels established in previous editions. Level I represents the beginning phase of acquiring game, dance, gymnastic, and movement concepts and skills that children pass through in the early primary years. As children move into level II, they begin to show an increased proficiency in all fundamental and manipulative skills, coupled with an improved ability to perform more coordinated movement pat- terns with greater speed and accuracy. Developmental level III is a period of refinement in all game, dance, and gym- mastic activities. Since children at each chronological age can wary as much as four or five years in physios.

In the early 1930s, Wilbur B. England, or Bill as we knew him, was re- sponsible for the case research published in the first purchasing text by Professor Howard T. Lewis at the Harvard Business School. Twenty years later, after a brilliant marketing career, Bill England returned to the Har- vard Business School as a professor and champion for the purchasing cause. For a quarter century he was the sole author of this text. His ideas and writings influenced thousands of practitioners and academics around the world. Bill will not see this 10th edition. PRACTICAL ENGINEERING STATISTICS

Much of an engineer's work requires the application of statistical meth- ods to obtain adequate quantitative results. In many cases, the engineer has had little training in statistics beyond the concepts of the mean, the standard deviation, the median, and the quartile. Even those who have had one or more courses in statistics will, at times, encounter problems that are beyond their capability to solve or understand. The aim of this book is to show the engineer how to select the sta- tistical approach that is most applicable to the problem at hand and how to correctly apply the chosen approach in specific cases.

CRIMINOLOGY

FREDA ADLER is Professor of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, School of Criminal Jus- tice. She received her B.A. in sociology, her M.A. in criminology, and her Ph.D. in sociol- ogy-all from the University of Pennsylvania. Teaching since 1968, Dr. Adler's subjects in- clude criminology, statistics, research methods, and international and comparative criminology. She has served as criminological advisor to the United Nations, as well as to federal, state, and foreign governments. Her published works in- clude six books as author or co-author, six books as editor, and over fifty journal articles. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Criminology, and the Journal of Criminal Justice.

URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

ALAN BLACK has been involved in urban transportation planning for the past 35 years. He served on the staffs of the Chicago Area Transportation Study and the Tri- State Transportation Commission in New York City in the 1960s. Later he worked for the consulting firm of Creighton, Hamburg, Inc., in Delmar, New York. He began a full- time teaching career in 1975 at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1981 he has been at the University of Kansas, where he is professor and former chair of the Gradu- ate Program in Urban Planning.
