Mechanics and Thermodynamics

The present textbook represents the first part of a four-volume series on experimental Physics. It covers the field of Mechanics and Thermodynamics. One of its goal is to illustrate, that the explanation of our world and of all natural processes by Physics is always the description of models of our world, which are formulated by theory and proved by experiments. The continuous improvement of these models leads to a more detailled understanding of our world and of the processes that proceed in it. The representation of this textbook starts with an introductory chapter giving a brief survey of the history and development of Physics and its present relevance for other sciences and for technology. Since experimental Physics is based on measuring techniques and quantitative results, a section discusses basic units, techniques for their measurements and the accuracy and possible errors of measurements.

Physics from Symmetry

In the two years since the first edition of this book was published I’ve received numerous messages from readers all around the world. I was surprised by this large number of responses and how positive most of them were. Of course, I was cautiously confident that readers would like the book. Since the first German edition of this textbook in 1993, many extensions and corrections of the text have been added in every further edition. For the present seventh English edition, the text of several chapters and also many figures have been thoroughly revised and updated, and plenty of additional information has been added. Werner Rodejohann joined the team of authors. He mainly cared about the chapters that deal with neutrinos and the Higgs particle. A new Chap. 11 has been added with the focus on neutrino properties, neutrino oscillations and Majorana neutrinos; additional aspects of the latter topic are summarised in Chap. 18. Chapter 12 has been extended by a discussion on spontaneous symmetry breaking, the Higgs potential and the experimental observation of the Higgs particle at the LHC.

Market Research

In the digital economy, data have become a valuable commodity, much in the way that oil is in the rest of the economy (Wedel and Kannan 2016). Data enable market researchers to obtain valuable and novel insights. There are many new sources of data, such as web traffic, social networks, online surveys, and sensors that track suppliers, customers, and shipments. A Forbes (2015a) survey of senior executives reveals that 96% of the respondents consider data-driven marketing crucial to success. Not surprisingly, data are valuable to companies who spend over $44 billion a year on obtaining insights (Statista.com 2017). So valuable are these insights that companies go to great lengths to conceal the findings. Apple, for example, is known to carefully hide that it conducts a great deal of research, as the insights from this enable the company to gain a competitive advantage (Heisler 2012).

System Dynamics

The world, today, is passing through a period of great turmoil, socially, politically and environmentally, in spite of the numerous technological wonders that are taking place almost everyday. One needs to take a systems view of the influencing factors and their interactions and impacts in order to find the root causes of these problems and to arrive at viable policy options. System dynamics provides such an approach. Principles of Microeconomics

One may wonder why I think that it makes sense to add yet another introductory textbook to the overfilled shelf of well-established books on microeconomics. There are three reasons that motivated me to do so. First, a lot of textbooks in economics want to make one believe that the theories presented are more or less context-free and objective. This is a wrong and dangerous belief. First of all, all theories are embedded in an intellectual milieu from which they borrow and on which they build. No man is an island, and no scientific theory is either. The tendency to shun any contextualisations of the theories comes at the risk of blindness towards the implicit assumptions, value judgements and epistemes on which the theory depends.
