Horror in Architecture

The central argument of Horror in Architecture, when it was first published in 2013, was that “unprecedented” moments—and transitional ones—create monsters.1 This substantially new edition of our study attempts to expand and sharpen an exploration of this process: of how interesting times make interesting buildings. It is a fascinating and difficult subject, and not an easy one to wrangle into anything resembling a conventional academic work. A book that links horror to architecture, and to industrial modernity, affective history, and creatures from speculative film and fiction, should perhaps be condemned outright as monstrous. This is an inherent danger of interdisciplinary writing, which often runs afoul of differing fields’ biases and emphases. Among architects and architectural theorists, the fundamental importance of buildings, as sites of life and as thingsin-the-world, can be assumed. When we published a “crossover” study that was to be read by literary historians, genre fans, writers, and artists, we quickly saw the limits of this assumption.

Designing spatial culture

Designing Spatial Culture investigates a powerful experiential dialogue formed between the habitation of space and a diversified cultural realm. This creative proposition binds and positions human activity and experience framing its histories, currency and future. Whilst the book distinguishes between the conditions of the existing urban/ architecture/ interior canon, it embraces a new agency of space, showcasing the encounters, assemblies and designs that shape human behaviours and the cultural forms of the built environment.

Wood is anisotropic, which means that it has different strengths in the x, y and z directions due to its natural growth. It is also characterised by imperfections in the areas of branching and by pre-existing damage due to the long growth process. Over the centuries, the structural handling of wood in terms of connection techniques and safety scenarios has developed in such a way that we have sufficient experience and knowledge to use the material safely and according to plan. At the same time, its uneven appearance shows it to be a natural, grown material. One example documenting the technological progress is laminated veneer lumber, developed to compensate for the irregularities of wood. Very thinly cut layers of wood (1 to 3mm) are glued on top of each other to form an engineered timber product in which the overlapping cancels out the imperfections of the wood.
