Greek architecture

This new revision was completed originally in 1989, and the proofs of the text had been corrected before the sad and deeply regretted death of Judy Nairn caused a delay to publication. I am grateful to Yale University Press and John Nicoll not only for taking up the Series, but allowing me to make further revisions to the text, and additions to the notes and bibliography. In particular, I have changed the system of transliteration from Greek in accordance with modern practice. No system is perfect, and I have not imposed this rigidly, keeping the older forms where they are the more familiar or are firmly fixed as an English convention.

The architecture the republic to the middle empire of Roman temples

This book examines the development of Roman temple architecture from its earliest history in the sixth century B.c. to the reigns of Hadrian and the Antonines in the second century A.D. Although archaeologists, architects, and historians have studied these temples since the Renaissance, this book is unique for its specific analysis of Roman temples as a building type. John Stamper analyzes their formal qualities, the public spaces in which they were located, and, most importantly, the authority of precedent in their designs. The basis ofthat authority was the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus, the city's first and most important temple. Stamper challenges the accepted reconstruction of this temple, proposing a new reconstruction and an assessment of its role in the transformation of Rome. He also traces Rome's temple architecture as it evolved over time and how it accommodated changing political and religious contexts, as well as the effects of new stylistic influences.

The origins of the Greek architectural orders

Modern views of the architectural orders take as their basis the writings of ancient sources, especially Vitruvius. His treatise, De Archi- tectura, defines the orders and explains their early emergence from wooden forms. He sets this development within a general evolution of architec- ture from primitive origins to perfection. Each order arises within its own geo- graphical region and is the creation of a single ethnic group whose name it bears. Other ancient sources offer refinements of certain points, including chronologi- cal development. The arts are generally viewed as culminating in the Classical period and declining in Hellenistic times, a pattern considered especially relevant for Doric architecture. These basic ideas have been adopted and further elabo- rated in later times. The Renaissance contributed a more rigid definition of the orders than Vitruvius envisioned, but one that fit better with their own interests. In the eighteenth century, J. J. Winckelmann set the development of art, includ- ing architecture, within a broad historical and cultural context that appealed to the contemporary emphasis on rationalism and has persisted to the present day.

Considérée comme un art, l'architecture est parfois perçue comme la chasse gardée d'une élite. Les livres et les magazines spécialisés s'adressent de préférence à des connaisseurs, familiers de la forme bâtie. Et pourtant les grands ouvrages architecturaux, parfois vieux de plusieurs siècles, continuent de remplir leur office.
