По химическому составу сталь подбиралась так, чтобы содержание углерода и марганца в ней колебалось от минимальных до максимальных значений по ГОСТ 7832—55. Всего было исследовано 23 варианта химического состава стали, выплавленной в кислых электропечах Ковровского завода. Причем, термической обработке подвергались заготовки, из которых потом вырезались образцы для испытания на растяжение и ударный изгиб.
