Management

Writing a survey hook poses a number of challenges. First, because it is a survey, it has to be comprehensive. Second, it has to he accurate and objective. Third, because management is a real activity, the hook has to be relevant. Fourth, it has to he timely and up-to-date. And fifth, it needs to be as interesting and as engaging as possible. Feedback on previous editions of my text has always suggested that I have done an effective job of meeting these goals. In this edition, I think these goals have been met even more effectively.

Itroduction to organizational behavior

Several years ago, Richard K. Irish wrote a book called I f Things Don't Improve Soon I May Ask You to Fire Me (Anchor Books. 1976). Dedicated to all those who labor in the vineyards, whether they “press the grapes or work in top management,” the book was a humorous—if accurate—expose on life in contemporary organizations. The major conclusion was that organizations are, more often than not, mismanaged, leading to an employee work climate that is not only inefficient but also stressful and dissatisfying. Although Irish may have overstated the problem slightly, significant improvements could be made in contemporary organizations, if only managers knew what to do.
