IBN AL-HAYTHAM’S THEORY OF CONICS, GEOMETRICAL CONSTRUCTIONS AND PRACTICAL GEOMETRY

This book provides a unique primary source on the history and philosophy of mathematics and science from the medieval Arab world. The present text is complemented by two preceding volumes of A History of Arabic Sciences and Mathematics, which focused on founding figures and commentators in the ninth and tenth centuries, and the historical and epistemological development of ‘infinitesimal mathematics’ as it became clearly articulated in the oeuvre of Ibn al-Haytham. This volume examines the increasing tendency, after the ninth century, to explain mathematical problems inherited from Greek times using the theory of conics. Roshdi Rashed argues that Ibn al-Haytham completes the transformation of this ‘area of activity’ into a part of geometry concerned with geometrical constructions, dealing not only with the metrical properties of conic sections but also with ways of drawing them and properties of their position and shape.

Migration and Religion IMISCOE Short Reader.

This book is the outcome of years of discussions between the two authors while colleagues at Lund and Malmö Universities, both in Sweden. It is also the result of years of research and teaching on related subjects. Both of us have specialised in migration studies and religious studies – Magdalena Nordin from the perspective of sociology of religion and Jonas Otterbeck from Islamic studies. Since 2017, Nordin has been associate professor at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion at Gothenburg University, and in 2018, Otterbeck was appointed professor at the Aga Khan University – Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, London.

Biology of SPIDERS

It is now exactly 30 years that Biology of Spiders was fi rst published, and I never expected nor planned to follow up with any further editions. When the science editor of Oxford University Press asked me last year whether I would prepare a third edition, I had at fi rst strong reservations because I knew vaguely how much work would be in stock for me: 12years had passed since the second edition, and literally thousands of articles about spiders had been published during that time.

ROCKET PROPULSION ELEMENTS

The book’s cover shows a typical separation of a payload stage or satellite from an upper stage of a space flight vehicle in the vacuum of space. There are two rocket propulsion systems. The liquid propellant rocket engine on the upper stage (on the lower left) has just lifted the satellite into space and has just been shut down. The reaction control system on the payload stage has four small inclined thrusters, which can be seen during their firing operation; they are moving the payload away from the expended upper stage. A small thruster’s plume (flame) has a bright, elliptically shaped, hot gas, very small core, which is visible. The hot exhaust gases disperse from this core in all directions, and this part of the plume is almost invisible.

STRAIGHT AND CROOKED THINKING

IN any book on this subject, the author has to make the difficult choice between taking his examples of crooked thinking from live controversial questions such as politics, and choosing them from the hackneyed and trivial sources favoured by the academic text-books. There are many advantages in adopting the latter course. Most important of all is the fact that the illustration of a faulty argument by a reference to Socialism or disarmament tends to distract the reader's attention from, the nature of the argument to the truth of the statement. For this reason it is impossible altogether to give up the use of trivial illustrations. Where-ever it is possible, however, I have made my illustrations from living controversial issues and from arguments that are actually used in defence of them. This choice may give offence to some reader who find that I have held up to ridicule arguments in defence of positions that are dear to them. In such cases, however, they can replace them by illustrations of similar crooked thinking on the part of those with whom they disagree.
