One of the main challenges in the fi eld of landscape studies is to make visible and analysable the complex and sometimes sharp links that articulate landscape as a social construction. In this context, the Action COST A27 “Understanding pre-industrial structures in rural and mining landscapes (LANDMARKS)” decided to approach some of the most relevant methodological and technical aspects on geoinformation technology, one of the most innovative areas in the field of landscape studies.

Silas Michaelides is currently affiliated with the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence of the Cyprus University of Technology. He has been the Director of the Department of Meteorology of Cyprus, a position he has reached having climbed through the scientific ranks of this governmental organization for more than 40 years. He holds a PhD in Meteorology, an MSc in Agricultural Meteorology, a Master’s degree in Public Sector Management, and a BSc in Mathematics. He has published 125 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, several of which are on the remote sensing of precipitation. He has also published one book on precipitation, and he has been the Guest Editor for more than 30 Special Issues and Conference Proceedings. He is a Member Emeritus of the European Geosciences Union, a Member of the American Meteorological Society, a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and a Member of the Hellenic Meteorological Society. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the Cyprus Remote Sensing Society.

The Ink of the Scholars Reflections on Philosophy in Africa

“The Ink of the Scholars is more precious than the blood of the martyrs” is a saying from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that gives its title to this book. Ahmad Bâba, arguably the most famous scholar from Timbuktu, quotes that statement and makes it the heart of his work On the Merits of Scholars, a reflection on the importance of the pursuit and the transmission of knowledge. Such a title can mcertainly serve as an emblem for his hometown, as Timbuktu was, historically, an intellectual beacon, an important center of learning and written erudition.
