Arthur Ashe Stadium at USTA’s Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is one of sport’s most beloved venues. But its roofless design meant rain often stopped play. To keep tournaments on schedule, the stadium’s original designers, architect Rossetti and engineer WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, proposed the tennis world’s largest long-span retractable roof. With a 7-minute opening time and a design that keeps sightlines unobstructed, the new lightweight fabric and steel canopy is favored to win over athletes and fans alike. TOTALLY POSITIVE TEACHING
WHILE WORKING OUT AT THE BALLY GYM ON LONG ISLAND, I ASKED FRANK, A fellow member, whether he remembered a special teacher from his school days. “Miss Maxon,” he replied. Frank was 15 when Miss Maxon taught her math lessons for the ages. Miss Maxon has surely passed away, because Frank describes her as having gray hair in 1932. His warm feeling for her today testifies to the powerful positive impact that a great teacher has on the life of her students. Miss Maxon isn’t dead. WRITE BETTER ESSAYS
Although each lesson is designed to be an effective skill builder on its own, it is important that you proceed through the book in order, from Lesson 1 through Lesson 20. The material in Section 2 references and builds on what you’ll learn in Section 1, as Sections 3 and 4 reference and build on Sections 1 and 2. Writing is a process— a series of skills, strategies, and approaches that writers use to create effective essays. In reality, this process isn’t as linear this book presents. You might prefer to brainstorm first, and then write a thesis statement—and that’s fine. However, once you understand the writing process, you can adapt it to your unique working style and to each specific writing situation you encounter.

Each chapter focuses on a specific reading skill so that you can build your reading skills step by step in just 20 minutes a day. Practice exercises in each chapter allow you to put the reading strategies you learn into immediate practice. If you read a chapter a day, Monday through Friday, and do all the exercises carefully, you should be able to understand—and remember—much more of what you read by the end of one month of study.

In the 30 years that I have been in English language training CELT), I have despaired of the lack of stimulating reading texts, accompanied by activities written specifically to energize and inspire the mature English learner. Why aren't many ESL reading texts sufficient? Although ESL learners may not yet have mastered English syntax, they still have interests beyond the mundane, and they certainly have ample reasoning ability. And while many reading texts are written about subjects of broad appeal, virtually all of them avoid topics that are deemed "too controversial" for the classroom setting. Unfortunately, many of those neglected topics are of great interest and relevance to adult lives. By steering course themes away from controversy, the instrucror also steers students away from motivating and stimulating topics.
