PRINCIPLES OF DYNAMICS

Although there has been a steady improvement in the depth of most introductory courses in dynamics during recent years, the place of an additional course at the intermediate level remains an important one. A course at this level is normally taken by first-year graduate students or by undergraduate seniors. The greater Inaturity of these students pennits the presentation of the subject from a nlore advanced viewpoint, with additional mathematical knowledge assunled, and with the inclusion of illustrative examples having more than the usual cOmplexity. Through the study of the general theory and its application in these exanlples, and by the solution of a variety of problems of comparable difficulty, Inost students can attain a real competence in dynamics.

ELEMENTARY CALCULUS

The calculus was originally developed using the intuitive concept of an infinitesimal, or an infinitely small number. But for the past one hundred years infinitesimals have been banished from the calculus course for reasons of mathematical rigor. Students have had to learn the subject without the original intuition. This calculus book is based on the work of Abraham Robinson, who in 1960 found a way to make infinitesimals rigorous. While the traditional course begins with the difficult limit concept, this course begins with the more easily understood infinitesimals. It is aimed at the average beginning calculus student and covers the usual three or four semester sequence. The infinitesimal approach has three important advantages for the student. First, it is closer to the intuition which originally led to the calculus. Second, the central concepts of derivative and integral become easier for the student to understand and use. Third, it teaches both the infinitesimal and traditional approaches, giving the student an extra tool which may become increasingly important in the future.

PRESTRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN

Prestressed concrete can be defined as concrete in which internal compressive stresses are deliberately introduced so as to counteract the tensile stresses (and consequent cracking) resulting from external loads to a desired degree. In simple words, a precompressed concrete is known as prestressed concrete. In concrete members, the prestress is commonly introduced by tensioning high tensile steel reinforcements known as tendons. The advantage of prestressing a structural member can be explained by considering a row of books shown in Fig. 1.1. Datasheets are indispensable, but they have limitations. Some are detailed; others are skimpy. Some show you sample schematics as a guide to using a component; many don’t. None of them tells you much about how a component works, because that’s not their purpose. Often they don’t mention other components that must be added. Some datasheets for DC-DC converters, for instance, say nothing at all about bypass capacitors, even though the capacitors may be essential. A datasheet for an optocoupler says nothing about the pullup resistor required by the open-collector output. Datasheets don’t facilitate comparison shopping. A datasheet from one manufacturer will not compare its products with those from another manufacturer, and may not even provide much guidance about alternatives that are available from the same manufacturer. For example, a datasheet for a linear voltage regulator won’t suggest that you might do better to use a DC-DC converter in an application where high efficiency is important. Most of all, datasheets don’t tell you how to avoid common mistakes. What actually happens if you connect that tantalum capacitor the wrong way around? A datasheet gives you the customary list of absolute maximum values, and after that, you are on your own, burning things out, encountering mysterious electronic behavior, and discovering limitations that are so well known, the datasheet didn’t bother to mention them.
