A concept is a unit of thought. Any part of experience that we can organize into an idea is a concept. For example, man’s concept of cancer is changing all the time as new medical information is gained as a result of experiments. Concepts or ideas that are the basis of science and engineering are chemical species, mass, momentum, and energy. These are all conserved quantities. A conserved quantity is one that can be transformed. However, transformation does not alter the total amount of the quantity. For example, money can be transferred from a checking account to a savings account but the transfer does not affect the total assets.

A number of years ago, one of us had the opportunity to attend lectures by a particularly talented and dedicated high-school science teacher, Miklós Vermes. The lectures were full of interesting and entertaining demonstrations, and he told the audience a lot about how the basic laws of physics fit together into a logical structure. Yet, when Professor Vermes was asked about what is the really important part in learning physics, he answered: "Solve homework problems. That way, you will get used to the stuff. In fact, 'getting used to it is a major part of learning." In this spirit, we hand this book to advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate students in Condensed Matter Physics. "Get used to it." When you are used to it, when you no longer stumble over every detail, you will be able to see the forest for the trees more clearly.

Micro- and Macro-Properties of Solids

This book deals with some micro and macroproperties of solids. Microproperties are perceived at the lattice level and are generally studied by diffraction or spectroscopic methods. The lattice constant, its temperature variation (measured through the property of thermal expansion), the amplitudes of atomic thermal vibrations (reflected in the Debye–Waller factor) and the colour centres are some examples of microproperties. In contrast, macroproperties are studied through measurements on material in bulk. Elastic properties, hardness, dielectric properties and melting temperature are examples of macro-properties.

METHODS FOR SOLVING MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS PROBLEMS

The authors have tried to select for the book methods that have become classical and generally accepted. However, some of the current versions of these methods may be missing from the book because they require special knowledge. The book is of the handbook-teaching type. On the one hand, the book describes the main definitions, the concepts of the examined methods and approaches used in them, and also the results and claims obtained in every specific case. On the other hand, proofs of the majority of these results are not presented and they are given only in the simplest (methodological) cases.
