Rural Governance in the UK Towards a Sustainable and Equitable Society
As the pandemic emerged, it disrupted global supply chains, with impacts being felt at a household level as access to certain goods became restricted. The expansion of the public sector in the UK, mirroring government actions elsewhere, sought to protect the many millions of workers who lost their jobs due to public health advice to ‘stay at home’ and the subsequent slowdown of the general economy.

Seduced by Science How American Religion Has Lost Its Way
The most important teachings religion offers our times—teachings about the meaning and purpose of finite human life—are not susceptible to scientific proof. When religion gives in to temptation and steps into the world of empirically testable hypotheses, it becomes just a subset of science. Some phenomena are caused by viruses, some by comets, some by God. When ministers, priests, and rabbis expound on doubleblind studies and the genetic causes of behavior, they do not elevate religion. They trivialize it. Religious leaders should instead use the legal freedom they enjoy under modern interpretations of the Constitution to speak to the timeless concerns of the great faiths.

The Orexin System. Basic Science and Role in Sleep Pathology
Orexins (hypocretins) and their receptors were discovered in 1998. Orexin neuropeptides are produced by a very small number of cells in the lateral hypothalamus, suggesting a fundamental role in homeostasis. Despite the name “orexin,” which was coined after the original discovery of its role in appetite regulation, the orexin system has foremost emerged as a crucial player in the maintenance of wakefulness and vigilance. The orexin system is highly conserved across vertebrates; its role in arousal and wakefulness stabilization is essential and cannot be replaced by another brain circuit. The discovery of hypocretin/orexin rapidly led to the hypothesis of its pathogenic contribution in the abnormal state of hyperarousal of insomnia and, for its deficiency, in narcolepsy and cataplexy.

Powerless Science? Science and Politics in a Toxic World
As editors of the book, we are indebted to many people without whom this project would not have been possible. We are thankful for the many stimulating and friendly discussions we had with Francis Chateauraynaud, Josquin Debaz, Antoine Blanchard, Axel Meunier, and Elifsu Sabuncu of the Research Project “FADO”—Low Doses and Expertise: Historical and Sociological Approaches. We also would like to thank Amy Dahan, Jean-Paul Gaudillière, Dominique Pestre, and Sezin Topçu for the sometimes lively, but always heavily inspiring, discussions we had during the three years that the seminar on the Global Government of Technosciences (GATSEG) lasted.

Spectacular Science, Technology and Superstition in the Age of Shakespeare
The idea of this book came about during the preparation of two panels on ‘Shakespeare and science’ for the Shakespeare 450 Congress held in Paris and organised by the Société française Shakespeare in April 2014. We are grateful to the Society, then presided by Dominique Goy-Blanquet, for its support.

Science in performance Theatre and the politics of engagement
This book was written mostly during 2018, looking back across roughly the first two decades of the twenty-first century. I attempt to chart particular historical and geographical coordinates in the first chapter. However, my choice of focus on science in performance has a lot to do with my own desire to reflect on a range of practices I encountered in some form from 2001 onwards.

A New Science for Future Climate Impact Modeling and the Quest for Digital Openness
This book is based on the dissertation »Opening Science for future. The Science & Technology of Climate Impact Prediction«, which was accepted by the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Siegen in November 2019. The research and publication were supported by the DFG Research Training Group Locating Media at the University of Siegen, Germany. Ethnographic field work for the study was enabled through a visiting fellowship at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The author would like to thank these institutions and the super visors, Tristan Thielmann and Cornelius Schubert, for their valuable support.

Forensic Science Evidence Can the Law Keep up With Science?
In criminal cases, jurors are the finders of fact. To determine those facts they are presented with evidence from witness testimony about what the witness observed or heard. It is for the jury to decide whether that testimony proves, either directly or circumstantially, beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant committed the crime with which he is charged. Additionally, the jury is allowed to hear conclusion or opinion testimony from persons who are regarded as experts. They are not allowed to give opinion testimony as to the ultimate issue of the defendant's guilt or innocence. They may give opinion testimony when those opinions would assist the jury in reaching that ultimate issue.
