The big book of lofts

The loft concept has, over time, become an architectural inspiration. Thanks to its total integration and proliferation in large cities, the loft is no longer considered a new or alternative type of dwelling. Although there are still many lofts that serve as places to live and work, today more and more are used solely as a dwelling. Nowadays many constructions that are not technically true lofts incorporate conventional characteristics with personalized elements in order to achieve the loft aesthetic—polished cement floors, brick walls, visual beams and stone and iron finishes. These features, originally included due to lack of funds available to rehabilitate or adapt the space, have become the true essence of these types of dwellings.

Designing tall buildings

A key to achieving this is an American invention: the tall building. The experiment in vertical building begun by Jennings, Burnham, Sullivan, and others in Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871 is central to the longterm sustainability of our planet. The earliest examples of this building form, begun in earnest in the 20th century, must now be reconsidered with the understanding that the tall building is not simply an expression of corporate power or civic pride—it must become the very basis of human settlement.

Timber Gridshells

THROUGHOUT history, people have constructed simple timber lattice shelters, such as the tepee or yurt, covered with animal skins, leaves, grasses and woven fabrics. Over the last fifty years, more sophisticated ‘webs of wood’ have emerged, with timber gridshells in particular becoming a structurally expressive form of architecture. Recent developments in digital design, 3­D modelling software and timber fabrication technologies, as well as trends towards low­carbon construction, have further reinforced architects’ interest in the use of lightweight timber grids and lattice structures.
