Она выдвинулась позднее возникновения древ нейших центров на Востоке и в Греции. Самыми древними цент- рами средиземноморской культуры являлись: Крит, Кикладские острова, малоазийские города и материковая Греция. Уже в очень отдаленную эпоху, за две тысячи лет до н. э., можно проследить нити связей этих древнейших центров с Западом Сицилией, Италией, Испанией. Однако, эти связи вырисовываются нам лишь в глубоком тумане и до сих пор наукой не выяснены. Что касается Апеннинского полуострова и Сицилии, где раз вернулась римско-италийская история, то они были также извест- ны еще в глубокой древности и служили, в некоторой степени, мо- стом между культурным Востоком и отдельными пунктами Запада. Весьма вероятно, что крито-микенская культура имела интенсивные связи не только с Египтом, но и с Сицилией и Италией и, воз можно, с древней Испанией (легендарный Тартесс).
