ВВЕДЕН За годы существования Советской власти советскими исто- риками проделана огромная работа по созданию исторических трудов, освещающих историю прошлого на основе марксист- ской методологии. Однако не все еще вопросы истории, в частности истории средних веков, подверглись достаточно полному анализу советских историков. Есть проблемы, недостаточно раскры- тые в советской медиевистике. К таким проблемам относится и проблема возникновения феодальных отношений у франков. Проблема возникновения феодальных отношений у фран- ков VI-VII вв., правда, вызвала появление отдельных статей и даже монографий советских авторов. Они посвящены раз- личным вопросам истории раннего и более позднего франк- ского общества 1. Но работы о франках, обобщающей эти во- просы, нет.

ВОЗНИКНОВЕНИЕ И РАЗВИТИЕ РАБСТВА В РИМЕ в VIII-III вв до н.э

Этой работе должны быть предпосланы некоторые ого- ворки, ибо в ней идет речь не только о рабах в собственном смысле слова, но и о других неполноправных общественных состояниях, так или иначе близких к рабству. Противоречивые характеристики различных категорий угнетенных и неполноправных людей свойственны не толь- ко новой, но и древней литературе: неоднократно лица одной и той же общественной принадлежности трактуются разными авторами то какрабы, то как свободные, хотя и неполноправные люди. Подобный разнобой в социаль- ных характеристиках свойствен не только древней истори- ческой и политической литературе, в особенности разно- речиво определявшей положение сельского населения, на- ходившегося в эксплуатации у античных полисов, которая принимала, видимо, довольно разнообразные формы.
