Algorithm 748. Enclosing Zeros of Continuous Functions

Two efficient algorithms for enclosing a zero of a continuous function are presented. They are similar to the recent methods, but together with quadratic interpolation they make essential use of inverse cubic interpolation as well. Since asymptotically the inverse cubic interpolation is always chosen by the algorithms, they achieve higher-efficiency indices: 1.6529... for the first algorithm, and 1.6686... for the second one. It is proved that the second algorithm is optimal in a certain family. Numerical experiments show that the two new methods compare well with recent methods, as well as with the efficient solvers of Dekker, Brent, Bus and Dekker, and Le. The second method from the present article has the best behavior of all 12 methods especially when the termination tolerance is small.

Geometry of Spaces of Constant Curvature

Spaces of constant curvature, i.e. Euclidean space, the sphere, and Loba- chevskij space, occupy a special place in geometry. They are most accessible to our geometric intuition, making it possible to develop elementary geometry in a way very similar to that used to create the geometry we learned at school. However, since its basic notions can be interpreted in different ways, this geometry can be applied to objects other than the conventional physical space, the original source of our geometric intuition.

Physik ist die Wissenschaft von Struktur und Bewegung der un-belebten Natur, den diese Bewegung hervorrufenden Kräften sowie den Zustandsänderungen der Stoffe und Energieformen. Die moderne Physik umfaßt jene Bereiche der Physik, dle nicht anschaulich in Raum und Zeit beschreibbar sind. Dazu gehören die Rela-tivitätstheorie, die Quantenmechanik, die Atomphysik und Kernphysik. Unter dem Begriff der klassischen Physik werden Vorgänge und, Probleme zusammengefaßt, die anschaulich in Raum und Zeit besch-reibbar sind. Daher gliedert sich die Physik ursprünglich in Akustik Wärmelehre, Magnetik. Elektrizitätslehre, Optik und Mechanik.
