Urban Screens Reader
On September 23, 2005, about 200 people crammed into the 11th floor of the POSTCS building in Amsterdam for the opening of the first Urban Screens conference. One of the most noticeable aspects of the event, organised by the Institute of Network Cultures in conjunction with Mirjam Struppek, Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, was the range of different interest groups it attracted. Artists sat alongside broadcasters and other ‘content providers', architects and urban planners jostled with advertisers, curators and new media theorists, while activists rubbed shoulders with screen owners, technology providers and signage analysts. This heady mix unleashed the kind of energetic discussion born of frequent misunderstandings as much as productive intersections, and crystallized the realisation that something significant had changed.

Wireless sensor and actuator networks for smart cities
Our lives are being transformed by the interplay between mobile networks, wireless communications, and artificial intelligence. This transformation is an outcome of the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) concept and advancements in computer architecture that translate into high computing power, high-performance processing, and huge memory capacities. In addition to the IoT, cyber-physical systems aim for the seamless integration of physical systems with computing and communication resources. Furthermore, in urban areas, the integration of "software-defined sensor networks" and "sensing as a service" concepts with legacy WSN-based systems is leading to the transformation of conventional city services towards smart cities. Smart energy, smart driving, smart homes, smart living, smart governance, and smart health are just a few services that smart cities can offer. This book focuses on novel solutions for wireless sensor and actuator networks in smart cities. This Special Issue invites academic and industry researchers in computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, and communication engineering, as well as ICT industry engineers and practitioners, to contribute original articles in all aspects of wireless sensor networks and actuator systems for smart cities.

Wearable technologies
This book explores recent advances in the multidisciplinary field of wearable technologies and the important remaining gaps that must be addressed in order to obtain a massive diffusion. Articles in this book address topics that include wearable sensing and bio-sensing technologies, smart textiles, smart materials, wearable microsystems, low-power and embedded circuits for data acquisition, and processing and data transmission. In the future, wearable technology will revolutionize the way we live. The current trend is to augment ordinary wearable objects - e.g. watches, glasses, bracelets, and clothing - with advanced information and communication technologies such as sensors, electronics, software, connectivity, and power sources. Wearable electronics and embedded computing systems for biomedical applications
Wearable electronics and embedded computing systems have been receiving a great deal of interest over the last two decades in research and commercial fields, with a special focus on biomedical applications. The key benefits introduced by these systems include their small size, lightweight, low-power consumption, and, of course, wearability. Major human-centered applications are related to medicine, enabling outpatient care and enhancing the quality of life for chronic disease patients, maybe preventing unnecessary hospitalization. These technological devices can indeed be cost effective and provide doctors with more accurate and reliable data.
