This book addresses the complex relationship between architecture and public life. It’s a study of architecture and urbanism as cultural activity that both reflects and gives shape to our social relations, public institutions and political processes. Building with Reclaimed Components and Materials

In recent years, the proportion of construction materials being reclaimed and reused has been falling. The proportion of reusable materials being recycled or sent to landfill is now around 50 per cent higher than it was ten years ago. As an example, some 700,000 tonnes of reusable wood were reclaimed in Britain in 1998 – around 10 per cent of the total annual demand. Since then the amount of timber being reclaimed has dropped dramatically and is still falling. Meanwhile hundreds of millions of pounds are being poured into the recycling sector. The consequence is that much irreplaceable, first-growth forest timber is now being chipped to produce tax-subsidized mulch, seen in sad bags in garden centres and supermarkets, at a very much higher fossil fuel energy cost than the human energy needed for reclaiming. This contributes to greatly increased carbon emissions. Another consequence is that the reclaimed timber trade in UK now has to look abroad to Europe, the US and even further afield to fulfil the strong private-sector demand for supplies of reclaimed timber. A similar picture exists for other countries where recycling of timber is being promoted in preference to reclamation, and for reclaimed materials sectors too.

Energy efficiency in historic buildings – application of part l of the building regulations to historic and traditionally constructed buildings

English Heritage supports the Government’s aims to improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings through Part L of the Building Regulations. Many improvements can be carried out, often at a relatively low cost, significantly enhancing the comfort of the building for its users, as well as providing savings on fuel bills. Such improvements can also help in meeting the Government’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. However, reducing carbon emissions from buildings is not just about heating and insulating the building fabric. Much can be achieved by changing behaviour, avoiding waste, using energy efficient controls and equipment, managing the building to its optimum performance, all of which is as relevant to older buildings as new ones.

Architectural Conservation in Asia

Asia’s rich historic built environment reflects the region’s position as the origin of some of the world’s most ancient civilizations, cultures and religions.1 For more than two millennia Asian cultures overlapped and interconnected as they expanded and developed through long-distance trade and communication, activities that eventually introduced followers of Hinduism, Buddhism and the philosophy of Confucianism to Islam, Shintoism and other beliefs. Built heritage developed accordingly, often melding novel concepts with traditional design. Today the region’s works of architecture are among its most distinct examples of cultural heritage, varying in scale from villages to several of the world’s most populous megacities. Whether viewing the conservation of Asia’s architectural heritage in terms of the distant or recent past, as individual buildings or within arrangements, or as urban or rural cultural landscapes, the range of Asia’s built heritage considered “worth preserving” is both vast and ever growing.
