Contemporary poetry

The study of English literature in the early twenty-fi rst century is host to an exhilarating range of critical approaches, theories and historical perspectives. ‘English’ ranges from traditional modes of study such as Shakespeare and Romanticism to popular interest in national and area literatures such as the United States, Ireland and the Caribbean. The subject also spans a diverse array of genres from tragedy to cyberpunk, incorporates such hybrid fi elds of study as Asian American literature, Black British literature, creative writing and literary adaptations, and remains eclectic in its methodology.Such diversity is cause for both celebration and consternation. English is varied enough to promise enrichment and enjoyment for all kinds of readers and to challenge preconceptions about what the study of literature might involve.

American culture in the 1910s

There is certainly little disputing that the war changed American culture enormously. It cemented the United States as the world’s economic superpower and produced the fi rst ‘American moment’ in world affairs, which arrived as American armies proved decisive in their fi rst- ever campaign in Europe and Wilson was briefl y the global visionary proposing a new world order in his campaign for the four-teen points at Versailles. The war set back the European economy by eight years and advanced the US economy by six – establishing the United States as both the world’s leading economy and creditor.

Problems of chronology in gandhāran art

In 2016 the Classical Art Research Centre at the University of Oxford launched a three-year project entitled ‘Gandhāra Connections’, which has been generously supported by the Bagri Foundation and the Neil Kreitman Foundation. Its aim is to stimulate and support fresh research and discussion on unresolved problems in the study of Gandhāran art, and in particular the long debated question of the links between Gandhāran and Graeco-Roman artistic traditions. During the consultation process that laid the foundation for the project, a variety of scholars with interests in Gandhāra made the same observation that several fundamental topics needed renewed attention in the light of recent research, as a precondition for understanding classical connections with Gandhāran art and many other matters besides. At the forefront of their minds was the problem of the chronology of Gandhāran art and archaeology. Chronology therefore provided the focus of the first international workshop of the Gandhāra Connections project, hosted in Oxford on 23rd and 24th March 2017, on which this volume is based.

Anti-colonial texts from the central american student movement 1929-1983

Most colonial and postcolonial studies seek to break with the myth of spontaneous resistance by asking when and why people rise up. In which historical conjunctures The texts below also seek to understand these questions and so offer up their own recursive anti-colonial theo-ries of militancy and revolt. From Ernesto Che Guevara’s foco theory to anti-communist millenarianism, Central American anti-colonial stu-dents tried to animate the pueblo using a variety of tactics. It would be worthwhile to think about them and how they articulated with global power.
