Access archaeology offers a different publishing model for specialist academic material that might traditionally prove commercially unviable, perhaps due to its sheer extent or volume of colour content, or simply due to its relatively niche field of interest. This could apply, for example, to a PhD dissertation or a catalogue of archaeological data. All Access Archaeology publications are available in open-access e-pdf format and in print format. The open-access model supports dissemination in areas of the world where budgets are more severely limited, and also llows individual academics from all over the world the opportunity to access the material privately, rather than relying solely on their university or public library. Print copies, nevertheless, remain available to individuals and institutions who need or prefer them.

La decisión de escribir esta tesis en español se originó a finales del año 2012, con el deseo de facilitar el accesoa los resultados de mis investigaciones para la gente de la región de Chaculá y el público guatemalteco en general. Esto fue en un tiempo cuando mis conocimientos del español eran mucho más limitados, por lo que la evolución de esta tesis marca también la de mis conocimientos del idioma. Aunque varias revisiones finales han mejorado el texto y eliminado errores, este carácter evolutivo queda grabado en el texto. Espero que los lectores, a pesar de los abusos de su idioma, puedan disfrutar de este libro. Para facilitar el uso del texto, siguen algunas breves notas sobre convenciones empleadas.

IIn the 1960s, the ‘Oulipo’ group of French writers and philosophers developed, as part of their playful pseudoscience of ‘pataphysics’, a concept they called ‘le plagiat par anticipation’ (plagiarism by anticipation). And while we will have much more to say about anticipatory plagiarism, a few words about this brilliantly inventive and peculiarly disciplined group are necessary to distinguish them from other, notably Russian, twentieth-century literary innovators.

The work of local artist, Nereo Costantini, the sculpture of Juliet was fi nanced by the Lions’ Club of Verona, completed in 1968 and displayed, for the fi rst time, in 1972. Dates are suggestive, and it was presumably in the wake of the success of the Franco Zeffi relli 1968 fi lm version of Romeo and Juliet that the Italian municipal- ity decided to commission its own memorial to Shakespeare’s creation. In so doing, the city authorities showed themselves responsive to a series of artistic rewritings and accre-tions. For Zeffi relli’s screen statement is but one entry in the continuum of envisionings of Romeo and Juliet, and prior to this the director had worked on Shakespearean stageproductions and operatic interpretations.
