ADVANCES IN NUCLEAR PHYSICS

This volume of Advances in Nuclear Physics addresses two very different frontiers of contemporary nuclear physics — one highly theoretical and the other solidly phenomenological. The first article by Matthias Burkardt provides a pedagogical overview of the timely topic of light front quantization. Although introduced decades ago by Dirac, light front quantization has been a central focus in theoretical nuclear and particle physics in recent years for two major reasons. The first, as discussed in detail by Burkardt, is that light-cone coordinates are the natural coordinates for describing high-energy scattering. The wealth of data in recent years on nucleon and nucleus structure functions from high-energy lepton and hadron scattering thus provides a strong impetus for understanding QCD on the light cone. Second, as theorists have explored light front quantization, a host of deep and intriguing theoretical questions have arisen associated with the triviality of the vacuum, the role of zero modes, rotational invariance, and renormalization.

BERTRAND RUSSELL ABC OF RELATIVITY

This book first appeared in 1925. The basic principles of relativity have not changed since then, but both the theory and its applications have been much extended, and some revision has been necessary for the second and subsequent editions. For the second and third editions I carried out these revisions with Bertrand Russell's approval. The revisions for this fourth edition are entirely my responsibility. I have again altered a number of passages to agree with present knowledge or opinion, and I have attempted to eliminate the possessive case, as applied to laws or theories, where it seemed to me no longer appropriate.

For many graduate students of physics the written qualifying examination is the last and one of the most important of the hundreds of grueling examinations that they have had to take in their career. I remember vividly my own experience in 1947 at the University of Chicago. After the qualifying examination, I knew I was finally free from all future examinations, and that generated a wonderful feeling of liberation and relief. Be that as it may, the written qualifying examination does serve a useful purpose, both for the faculty and for the students themselves. That is why so many universities give these exams year after year in all parts of the world.

A Course in Fluid Mechanics with Vector Field Theory

Whereas heat and mass are scalars, fluid mechanics concerns transport of momentum, which is a vector. Heat and mass fluxes are vectors, momentum flux is a tensor. Consequently, the mathematical description of fluid flow tends to be more abstract and subtle than for heat and mass transfer. In an effort to make the student more comfortable with the mathematics, we will start with a review of the algebra of vectors and an introduction to tensors and dyads.
