Physics of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

More serious efforts to use the power hidden in magnetic materials were made only much later. For instance, in the 18th century smaller pieces of magnetic materials were combined into a larger magnet body that was found to have quite a substantial lifting power. Progress in magnetism was made after Oersted discovered in 1820 that a magnetic field could be generated with an electric current. Sturgeon successfully used this knowledge to produce the first electromagnet in 1825. Although many famous scientists tackled the phenomenon of magnetism from the theoretical side (Gauss, Maxwell, and Faraday) it is mainly 20th century physicists who must take the credit for giving a proper description of magnetic materials and for laying the foundations of modem technology. Curie and Weiss succeeded in clarifying the phenomenon of spontaneous magnetization and its temperature dependence. The existence of magnetic domains was postulated by Weiss to explain how a material could be magnetized and nevertheless have a net magnetization of zero. The properties of the walls of such magnetic domains were studied in detail by Bloch, Landau, and Néel.

PHYSICS DEMYSTIFIED

This book is for people who want to learn basic physics without taking a formal course. It can also serve as a supplemental text in a classroom, tutored, or home-schooling environment. I recommend that you start at the beginning of this book and go straight through, with the possible exception of Part Zero. If you are confident about your math ability, you can skip Part Zero. But take the Part Zero test anyway, to see if you are actually ready to jump into Part One. If you get 90 percent of the answers correct, you’re ready. If you get 75 to 90 percent correct, skim through the text of Part Zero and take the chapter-ending quizzes. If you get less than three-quarters of the answers correct in the quizzes and the section-ending test, find a good desk and study Part Zero. It will be a drill, but it will get you “in shape” and make the rest of the book easy.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE CONCEPTS

This book is written to support a one-semester general education course in physical science. The course is required of virtually all non-science students at our university (about 2500 per semester) although some satisfy the requirement by examination. The course is meant to be a broad exposure to physical science. The students who take the course are primarily freshman who are not science majors, but who will follow the course with an elective which pursues some area of science in greater depth. The course is conceptual rather than mathematical. It is meant to be a presentation of some of the most significant ideas in science, as they might be presented to a lay audience by specialists. The course is supported by faculty lectures which include live demonstrations and audiovisual presentations without which the course would be much different and incomplete.
