Brutalism. Post-war british architecture

As a boy growing up in Woking, Surrey, I became acutely aware of what was frequently termed 'the concrete jungle'. The town's civic centre, central library, public swimming pool and shop- ping precinct, now all demolished or restyled, were built during the 1960s and 1970s in what I now recognize as the 'Brutalist' style. The dis- tinctive British American Tobacco building, which still stands and is now occupied by Telewest, was one of the last to be completed and is a sig- nificant late example which dominated the town and remains a well-known local landmark. At the time, Brutalism was in its final phase and was already being replaced with neo-vernacular, 'Dutch Barn'-style civic building and was regard- ed, by and large, as outdated and ugly. Never- theless, it must have planted a seed in my mind which would later grow into a great love of twen- tieth-century Modernist architecture, although it took many years to reach maturity.

На основе записей еще при жизни Фарадея эти лекции были изданы отдельной книгой с иллюстрациями и комментариями Крукса.  Она переведена на все основные мировые языки, снова и снова переиздается и неизменно пользуется широким успехом как у школьников и студентов, так и у взрослых читателей. В формате PDF A4 сохранён издательский дизайн.

Architecture in the 20th century

New aesthetic potential was released at the end of the eighteenth century in the wake of the Enlightenment. The natural sciences were declared a recog- nized means of explaining the world, and geometric axioms competed with anatomic rules of proportion. The definition of units of measurement based on natural constants was one of the products of the French Revolution; the metre became a valid unit of measurement when the standard metre, one forty- millionth of the earth's circumference, was stored in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris on 22 June 1799.
