MOSCOW MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS

Nowadays, in the time when the level of teaching universally decreases and “pure” science does not appeal as it used to, this book can attract new students to mathematics. The book can be useful to all teachers and instructors heading optional courses and mathematical groups. It might interest university students or even scientists. But it was primarily intended for high school students who like mathematics (even for those who, perhaps, are unaware of it yet) and to their teachers. The complete answers to all problems will facilitate the latter to coach the former. The book also contains some history of Moscow Mathematical Olympiads and reflections on mathematical olympiads and mathematical education in the Soviet Union (the experience that might be of help to western teachers and students). A relation of some of the problems to “serious” mathematics is mentioned.

FILSAFAT ILMU

Filsafat Ilmu merupakan bagian dari epistimologi (filsafat pengetahuan) yang secara spesifik mengkaji hakikat ilmu atau pengetahuan ilmiah. Ilmu merupakan cabang pengetahuan yang mempunyai ciri-ciri tertentu. Meskipun secara metodologis ilmu tidak membedakan antara ilmu-ilmu alam dengan ilmu-ilmu sosial, namun karena permasalahan-permasalahan teknis yang bersifat khas, maka filsafat ilmu ini sering dibagi menjadi filsafat ilmu-ilmu alam dengan ilmu-ilmu sosial. Pembagian ini lebih merupakan pembatasan bidang-bidang yang ditelaah, yakni ilmu-ilmu alam atau ilmu-ilmu sosial, dan tidak mencirikan cabang filsafat yang bersifat otonom. Ilmu memang berbeda dari pengetahuan-pengetahuan secara filsafat, namun tidak terdapat perbedaan yang prinsip antara ilmu-ilmu alam dan sosial, dimana keduanya mempunyai ciri-ciri keilmuan yang sama.

Manusia menjadi berpecahbelah. Setelah Pythagoras, filsafat dipecah menjadi idealisme oleh Plato dan dan realisme oleh Aristoteles. Setelah itu, para filosof terpecah menjadi idealis dan realis, rasionalis dan empiris, dan seterusnya. Sebagian berusaha menggabungkan separasi itu. VERIFICATIONISM

Not a chronological account of verificationist philosophies, Misak’s book nevertheless draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary sources to advance an argument for a position difficult to label in a non-misleading way. She calls her position ‘moderate verificationism’ but also presents it as a development of Peircean pragmatism. Crucial to this view is a broader concept of experience and a broader account of what it is to understand a sentence than are found in earlier forms of verificationism. I would urge those discouraged by the current state of Anglo-American philosophy to give Misak a hearing. In her hands philosophy is flourishing.
