Concepts in Organic Electronics

This textbook provides the essential principles of organic electronics from its fundamental concepts through to describing archetype devices that exploit the unique properties of the immense materials family of organic semiconductors in use today. An organic molecule is one that is carbon rich or carbon based. Formally, an organic molecule has at least one C–H bond. Many of these molecules, when in the solid phase, are electronic materials (i.e., they are used as conductors, as PEDOT:PSS, semiconductors, such as PTCDA, or insulators, such as PMMA). For active electronic devices, the large class of organic semiconductors are of greatest interest and are the focus of this book. Organic materials are also “soſt” materials: they are the substances of which plastics are composed, and their relatively weak intermolecular bonding forces make them exceptionally lightweight, malleable, bendable, and moldable into a variety of shapes. This is in contrast to conventional semiconductors (of which Si is the archetype) that are brittle and heavy. Hence, while conventional semiconductor circuits are inherently two-dimensional, organics can take on any number of forms and as a result are found in foldable displays, “electronic fabrics,” active sensors that conform to the skin, and so on. These unusual properties separate organic semiconductors from all other active electronic materials, allowing them to be used in applications that are limited only by the imagination of the engineers who are contemplating new uses that are not already populated by conventional electronic appliances.
