Testing for Language Teachers

The objective of this book is to help language teachers write better tests. It takes the view that test construction is essentially a matter of problem solving, with every teaching situation setting a different testing problem. In order to arrive at the best solution for any particular problem - the most appropriate test or testing system - it is not enough to have at one’s disposal a collection of test techniques from which to choose. It is also necessary to understand the principles of testing and how they can be applied in practice.

Justice,ideology, and education are provocative words in the English language. Volumes have been written on each of these terms, and we still argue vehemently about what each of them means. Who should decide the purposes of schools? Does it make a difference what kinds of schools exist for different students? How is justice a dominant consideration in providing schooling? What ideologies lie behind our efforts at mass education, and which ideologies are to be taught? How do the current reforms in education fit with our traditions—most particularly, our traditional ideology of democracy and its attendant concern for justice? Engaging student interest through reading selections written by other students on high-interest themes. Students read essays by peers on such topics as changing family structures and interracial dating and marriage, subjects that are of immediate relevance to multicultural college students. The readings are intended as invitations for reflection and discussion rather than as models to imitate.
